Getting tangibles is the way to honour and celebrate our ancestors
As we near the midway point of Black History Month/ African Heritage Month, it’s essential for us to recognize and understand how the Black community should celebrate the Month.
The forerunner to BHM started back in the 1920s by Carter G Woodson, who wrote the Miseducation of the Negro. The idea was to re-educate the Black community of our history that was destroyed and stolen by White invaders and so-called scholars.
However, in modern times BHM is used to further miseducate us and a way for politicians to get quick unearned points from the Black community. As politicians congregate at our community centres and events halls, we compiled a quick list of tangibles you should be requesting as they further attempt to gain political capital by exploiting us. So after they make their speech on “Diversity and Inclusion” , say ” those are not tangibles” and ask for these.
Reparations
The case for reparations has been made since the abolishment of slavery. However, we have reached a tipping point thanks to work done by the New Black Media in the U.S. The facts on the economic benefits of slavery had on White society, and the detrimental impact it had on the Black society is well documented. Anyone who does not understand and agree with cash reparations for their descendants -along with other compensation- for those who died in the killing fields of the plantations should instantly be considered a Suspected White Supremacist. For those who are wondering, yes, there was a lucrative slave industry in Canada as well.
Guaranteed Government Contracts
White and other non-Black groups benefit daily from lucrative government contracts. The cities of Halifax, Toronto, Memphis, are just a few examples. The city of South Bend under Democratic Presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg has been criticized for denying Black companies city contracts. The new Mayor of Chicago Lori Lightfoot has pushed out Black business people by proposing that LGBTQ companies should get city contracts first.
Land Claims
Across North America, there were pockets of land ceased from the Black community. This is especially true in Halifax, where Africville was razed to make room for a bridge. The Black community of Preston is currently fighting for its land from the federal government. Not owning the property your ancestors paid taxes on is not only a violation of human rights but stifles the economic growth of the Black community.
Policing
As police departments continue to brutalize the Black citizenry, they are receiving more funding with each budget to do so. Advocating for fair policing can be extremely difficult as it’s the enforcement arm of White Supremacy. Therefore politicians understand the police are the thin blue line between White Privilege and Black Empowerment. Instead of protesting and marching, explain to politicians that if they don’t reign in the police departments, they risk losing their seats come re-election time. To make politicians bow to your will, listen to the Black Agenda on our YouTube Channel. We explain what the Black Agenda is and ten easy steps to achieve it.
That’s it. These are the four main things you should be relaying to a politician when you meet with them. “Diversity and Inclusion” are not tangibles, as they are open to interpretation. Getting financial payments for reparations, guaranteed percentages of government contracts, and land are tangibles. If you meet with politicians and are not getting tangibles- you’re getting trickbagged.
